What is the TOEIC test?
The Test of English for International Communication
(TOEIC®) is a multiple-choice English language proficiency
test for people whose native language is not English.
It measures English comprehension, speaking, writing
and reading skills. The scores indicate how well people
can communicate in English in business, commerce and
industry.
The TOEIC test was developed in the USA in 1979 by
ETS (Educational Testing Service) following a request
from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Trade and Industry
(MITI).
The TOEIC test assesses proficiency at all levels (beginner
to advanced).
The TOEIC test has had more than 2 million candidates
worldwide. Many large international groups and approximately
2000 companies in Europe rely on TOEIC to assess the
English language proficiency of their employees.
In Europe it is now becoming commonplace to see a TOEIC
score included in job descriptions or job offers in
the large groups such as Accenture, Airbus, Coca Cola,
Renault, EADS, PSA Peugeot Citroen, , Unilever, NEC
Computer International, Swiss air Group and many others.
Many well-known business schools and institutions in
France and Europe, along with the university networks,
request a TOEIC score be obtained before awarding their
degrees and diplomas.
What is the format of the
TOEIC test?
The TOEIC test is a two-hour multiple-choice test that
consists of 200 questions divided into two sections:
Listening section:
There are 100 listening comprehension questions
administered by audiocassette
Reading section: There
are 100 reading questions
The TOEIC test questions are based on real-life work
settings in an international environment (meetings,
travel, telephone etc.). Each candidate is awarded a
separate mark for written and oral comprehension on
a scale from 5 to 495 points. The total score is between
10 and 990 points.-
